Since its early years, POSTECH has established the Graduate Institute of Ferrous Technology (GIFT), serving as a central hub for education and research in the steel science and engineering field.
For many years, research in ferrous metallurgy has been primarily carried out within GIFT, and the growing national and industrial demand for eco-friendly steel technologies has further underscored the importance of advancing hydrogen-based steelmaking processes.
In the era of carbon neutrality and energy transition, hydrogen-reduced ironmaking stands as a critical technology that will define the future competitiveness of the steel industry and serve as a core element of national strategic innovation.
To enhance our research capabilities and systematically support the development of hydrogen-based green steel processes, POSTECH has reorganized and newly established the Institute for Hydrogen-Reduced Ironmaking Technology as a dedicated research institute under the Graduate Institute of Ferrous & Eco Materials Technology (GIFT).
Our institute is committed to the following missions:
Establishing a leading research hub for hydrogen-based, eco-friendly ironmaking processes.
Expanding practical and industrial contributions through national R&D programs and collaborative projects with industry partners.
Cultivating highly trained specialists through close educational and research collaboration with GIFT.
In particular, the integrated research–education model, in which faculty members and graduate students belonging to GIFT jointly engage in research activities, provides the essential foundation of expertise, continuity, and scalability required for the advancement of hydrogen-reduced ironmaking technologies.
By leveraging GIFT’s robust research ecosystem, our institute aims to contribute to the creation of societal value through the development of sustainable and environmentally responsible steelmaking technologies
Moving forward, the Institute for Hydrogen-Reduced Ironmaking Technology will continue to collaborate closely with academia, industry, and government sectors to drive innovation in the future steel industry and grow together with GIFT.
Thank you.
